Latest News at the Alfred – Blood Diseases on the rise… What would you think was the fastest growing disease group? Heart Disease? Cancers? According to The Alfred’s Director of Clinical Haematology and the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases, Professor Hatem Salem, diseases of the blood are affecting our community in large numbers. Blood diseases include anaemias such as iron deficiency and blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), malignant conditions like leukaemia and lymphoma and myelomas as well as bleeding disorders such as haemophilia and von Willebrand diseases. The Australian Centre of Blood Diseases, which is a joint project between Monash University and The Alfred, opened 18 months ago. The centre has a large research project, running laboratory research and clinical trials on DVTs, myeloma, lymphoma, leukaemia and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. “We study basic steps that cause diseases so we can understand the disease better and how complications occur,” Hatem said. “The centre has active research programs in bone marrow transplantation, myeloma, haemophilia and blood clotting. In that area we are looking at how and why blood clots. Blood clots can occur in veins causing DVTs or arteries causing heart attacks and stroke. We are fortunate to be close to the Baker and in a position to explore the connection between diabetes and heart disease.” |
